Our school is renovating. Our bleachers are old and we're getting new ones. Is ADA-compliant seating a legal requirement, or just a recommendation?
Thanks!

Hi Erin!
Short answer: Yes
Under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), any new installation or major alteration to existing bleachers must include accessible seating. This isn't just a suggestion; it's federal law.
You need to have a certain number of wheelchair spaces (based on total seating capacity) located so they have sightlines comparable to other spectators. They also need to be on an accessible route. Any reputable bleacher company will know the exact requirements and help you design a compliant layout. Don't risk the liability or exclude members of your community!
